Answer to Pop BirdQuiz #23: Florida, May
For this quiz we had two different views of the same bird. First we have a relatively head-on shot.
There are a few things that strike me immediately upon seeing this bird in flight, even from this angle. The first is the all-white head and undersides of the body, which could remind us of some gulls or terns. But then we see the bill, and that is definitely not the bill of a gull or tern. That is a raptor bill. The wings appear mostly black, except for a broad white patch on the undersides (‘armpits’). Finally, the tail seems quite long.
In the second photo we we can see a little more detail, revealing the lack of any marking on the body, the extent of the ‘armpit’ patch, and the deeply forked shape of that all-black tail.

There is only one bird that fits that description. It falls into the category of ‘unmistakable’ birds. This is a Swallow-tailed Kite, most easily seen in Florida and the southeastern states, but occasionally spotted wandering outside of that range. It can be distinguished from its relative the Mississippi Kite because Mississippi Kites are mostly two-toned gray, have a dark eye patch, and a gently rounded tail in flight. This is definitely a ‘wow’ bird!
Here is a perched Mississippi Kite for comparison, where you can see the overall gray pattern and the dark eye patch.
